MIGRAINES & HEADACHES
A headache is a pain in your head and face. There are many different types of headaches, and they are common conditions that can have a massive impact on your daily life. The most common types are tension headaches and migraines. About 20% of the population at any given time suffers from tension headaches, and about 25% of Canadian households are affected by migraines. The intensity of headaches can range widely from mild to severe, debilitating pain.
The main difference between tension headaches and migraines is that migraines are usually associated with moderate to severe pain in and around the eye that lasts for few hours to days, may be associated with aura, light sensitivity, and severe pain that can lead to nausea or vomiting. A tension headache are mild to moderate intensity and feels more like pressure or a band around the forehead.
How can spinal misalignment cause migraines and headaches?
The causes of headaches and migraines are still in debate, but many factors can affect their intensity, frequency, and duration. Headaches and migraines can be hormonal or lifestyle-induced, but most importantly, craniocervical dysfunction (upper cervical misalignment) can play a big part in the causes of headaches and migraines. Spinal misalignment can cause muscle spasms and inflammation around the joints and can contribute to an increase in tension to the neck and the head, leading to headaches and often making them last longer.
